The people of Argungu welcomed spectators from across the country for the grand finale of the 61st edition of the Argungu International Fishing Festival on Saturday, February 14, 2026. The historic town stands as a beacon of cultural excellence in Kebbi State, northwest Nigeria.

The four-day festival, a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of the Argungu people, featured a variety of traditional events, including wrestling competitions, musical performances, and other cultural displays. This year’s edition was particularly significant, marking the return of the annual event after a six-year hiatus.

First held in 1934, the festival remains one of Northern Nigeria’s most prominent cultural gatherings, blending tradition, sport, and celebration while reinforcing national unity and shared heritage.

The highlight of the festival was the highly anticipated fishing competition, where local fishermen competed to catch the heaviest fish.

Abubakar Usman emerged as the overall winner after catching a 59-kilogram fish, securing his place as the best participant of the event. He was awarded a cash prize of ₦1 million and two brand-new Toyota Saloon cars donated by the Sokoto government and Walcott Rice respectively

Abdullahi Garba finished in second place after catching a 40-kilogram fish, trailing the winner by 19 kilograms. He received ₦750, 000 in prize money, a seat in the upcoming pilgrimage from the Sokoto state government, and a car.

The contest for third place was fiercely competitive, with two participants Danlansu Dangane and Rabiu Dauda tying after each caught a 33-kilogram fish. Both were rewarded with ₦1 million and motorcycles.

In his address at the closing ceremony, Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, described the festival as a powerful symbol of national harmony and unity.

He noted that the event demonstrated the ability of Nigerians to coexist peacefully despite differences and commended Kebbi State for the successful planning and seamless execution of the festival. He also expressed satisfaction with the conduct and outcomes of the event.

Organisers noted that this year’s edition witnessed strong participation, orderly conduct, and renewed enthusiasm from both participants and visitors.

Community leaders and tourists observed that the festival continues to strengthen social bonds while promoting tourism, cultural preservation, and local economic development.
