Plogging Nigeria UDUS chapter on Saturday, 14th of February, 2026 organised a campus sanitation drive at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto as part of its efforts to promote environmental cleanliness and healthy living among students.

The exercise, themed “Love Plog,” attracted participants from both the main campus and the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) campus. Starting from the university stadium, halls of residence, walkways and down to the various corners of the school, participants picked up trashes in a bid to show love to the environment by having a clean one.

In line with Plogging Nigeria’s slogan, “We Keep Fit to Keep Clean,” volunteers began the exercise with a warm-up session. They were also educated on safety measures, including how to properly use and remove gloves to protect themselves while handling waste. Personal protective equipment (PPE) was distributed before participants proceeded with the exercise in collaboration with Uni-SDG, Rotaract, and Student Union, whose representatives were all in attendance.

The exercise concluded with a session that included the inauguration of new executives. The former head plogga of the UDUTH chapter, Saidu Abdulrahman commended volunteers for their dedication and explained the benefits of volunteering. He pledged to support members financially and help connect them with opportunities at the Ministry of Environment. He also praised the outgoing executives for laying a strong foundation for the initiative.

The newly inaugurated executives include Abdulmalik Abdulrazaq as the Head Plogga, Abubakar Muizat as the Assistant Head Plogga, Yusuf Abdulqudus as Plogga in-charge for Main Campus, Abdullahi Abdullateef as the General Secretary, and Hafeez Galadima as the Plogga in-charge for UDUTH.

A “Love Session” was also held, during which volunteers spoke about love from different perspectives, including love for the environment, love for humanity, and love for the sick.

Speaking at the event, Amina, a 400-level Nursing student and the president of Rotaract UDUS, said she joined after being invited by the club and expressed appreciation to the organisers.

“I am happy to participate because the cleaning drive gave me the opportunity to contribute positively to the environment. I appreciate the organisers for bringing students together and hope the university introduces more programs to engage students,” she said.

She also noted the shortage of waste bins on campus, explaining that many bins are broken or missing and have not been replaced. She urged both students and the university administration towards improving waste management.

The newly appointed Head Plogga expressed his commitment to organising at least nine more plogging drives before the end of the academic session. He encouraged more students to get involved, stressing the importance of collective responsibility.

“If we do not take responsibility for our environment, who will? Students must lend their strength and their voices to protect the community,” he said.

The sanitation drive is an indication of the growing role of student-led initiatives in promoting environmental sustainability and civic responsibility within the university community. It is therefor important for students to take advantage of initiatives like this to contribute to the sustainability of their environment.
