The Association of Muslim Health Students (AMHS) on Sunday, June 7, 2026, launched the 2026 edition of Ash-Shifa magazine alongside the graduation ceremony of two students who successfully completed the memorization of the Holy Qur’an. The event took place at the College of Health Sciences (CHS) Auditorium.

The gathering attracted dignitaries from the medical college and the wider Muslim community. Among those present were the Dean of Student Affairs, representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Zayyanu Usmanu; the Chief Medical Director of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, represented by Professor Asmau; and the Chief Judge of the National Qur’an Competition, Sheikh Abdullahi Sani, among other distinguished guests.

Moderating the event was a former Ameer of the association, Abdussalam Murtala Akibu, who took attendees on a brief journey through the history of the organization.

“It was once known as ISMA (Islamic Students Medical Association), where only students studying Medicine and Surgery were members. As the college expanded and new courses emerged, there was a need for inclusivity and a way to tackle interdepartmental rivalry at the hospital level. AMHS was therefore created to build relationships among future healthcare professionals right from their student days,” he explained.

The guest speaker, Navy Captain Umar Faruq, who served as the Ameer of the association during the 1998/1999 session, delivered a lecture on balancing faith, career, family life, and emotional well-being.

Speaking on the importance of Muslims participating in every field of human endeavour, he cited Imam Al-Ghazali.

“Any community without doctors, lawyers, geographers, and other essential professionals has been cursed by Allah. As Muslims, we need representatives in every profession within our community,” he said.

The naval officer also reminded Muslims to remain grateful to Allah for His countless blessings.

“In the military, we are paid compensation for losing body parts during war, yet that compensation is never enough. Now imagine receiving those body parts for free from Allah. Gratitude should never leave our hearts,” he remarked.

The next segment of the programme was the graduation ceremony of two Qur’an memorizers, Abdulrahman Ashiru Sani and Fahmiyya, both 500-level MBBS students. The duo recited selected verses from the Holy Qur’an and were presented with awards of recognition.

Speaking with Gamji Press, Abdulrahman revealed that his motivation for memorizing the Qur’an stemmed from both spiritual rewards and a desire to fulfil his late father’s wish.

“I memorized the Qur’an because of the immense blessings attached to it. Secondly, it was my late father’s dream to have his children memorize the Qur’an. It took me four years to complete the memorization. I had started earlier, but I kept relapsing and restarting,” he said.

On balancing memorization with medical studies, he explained that he dedicated specific periods of the day to the Qur’an.

“I usually reserved time after Fajr and Maghrib for memorization. My advice to students who want to begin this journey is to purify their intentions and do it solely for the sake of Allah.”

The launch of the Ash-Shifa magazine was the highlight of the event. During the fundraising session, the chairman of the occasion urged attendees to see their donations as investments in the Hereafter.

“Whatever you give will come back to you in folds. This is an opportunity to invest in something that will continue to benefit you even after you have left this world,” he said.

He further disclosed that proceeds from the launch would be channelled towards the female mosque project, for which a site had recently been acquired.

Speaking on the project, the Deputy Ameera of AMHS, Taheera Yusra Taheer, expressed her excitement over the development.

“To be honest, I am very happy. It feels like a long dream that has finally become a reality,” she said.

According to her, the project was inspired by the need for a dedicated place of worship for female students.

“There are mosques scattered across campus for male students, but for females, it has always been a struggle. Most times, sisters have had to make do with makeshift spaces that were not convenient for prayers.”

She expressed hope that the initiative would draw attention to the challenges faced by female students and encourage stakeholders to provide more facilities that support their religious obligations.

As the event came to a close, attendees departed with copies of the magazine, renewed inspiration from the stories shared, and a reminder to put Allah first in all their dealings
