Abdulrasheed Hamidat reports,

The Nigerian Universities Nursing Studentsโ€™ Association (NUNSA), UDUS, on Saturday, January 24, 2026 organized a Freshersโ€™ Day celebration, to welcome new students with orientation session, social and sporting activities.

The programme held at the Old College of Health Sciences Auditorium and later at the sports field, brought together students of the Department of Nursing Sciences to guide the freshers academically and welcome them socially as they began their journey in the Nursing department.

An orientation session was held with the Head of Department, Dr. Auwalu Muhammad, and other academic staff in attendance, including the department’s Examination officer, Nr. Salim Isah and pioneer Best Graduating Student of the department, Nr. Zakari Usman.

Students were lectured on the rules and expectations of Usmanu Danfodiyo University and the Department of Nursing Sciences, followed by an interactive session where they asked questions about academic life

The Head of the Department, Dr. Auwalu Muhammad announced a change in lecture venue for 100-level departmental courses.

โ€œI have observed that the new students are much in numbers and it takes the driver about three turns of going to Psite and coming back whenever they have departmental lectures in UDUTH,โ€ he said.

โ€œConsidering how stressful and time wasting this may be, they will now be taking their departmental lectures at the permanent site,โ€ he announced.

The afternoon session featured karaoke, dance competition, and fun question-and-answer activities, ending with a football match between UG1 and UG2 students.

The UG1 students defeated UG2 students 2โ€“1 in a keenly contested football match to win the freshers cup, while UG2 students won the female sports competitions.

In an interview with our correspondent at Gamji Press, the Departmental President, Faisal Isah Alhaji, said the programme was organized to guide the freshers properly.

โ€œThis programme is to enlighten the freshers about the Doโ€™s and Donโ€™ts of the department directly from the academic staff,โ€ he said.

โ€œThis programme encourages them socially in such a way that it allows them participate and interact with their senior colleagues freely,โ€ he added.

He further said, โ€œThis programme makes them more active and participative in all programs organized by the Nursing Association.โ€

A cross-section interaction with the students had the program being described as informative and educative.
