The Super Eagles of Nigeria, on Monday, 7th of January, 2025 has made history with their 4-0 win against the Mambas of Mozambique at the Fez Stadium, marking the first time Nigeria will be winning their first four matches at the African Cup of Nations.

The match which kicked off at 8:00PM West African Time lived up to expectations as Victor Osimhen wasted no time in breaking through Mozambique’s defence in the second minute, a goal that was ruled offside.

Ademola Lookman, the 28 year old Atlanta forward opened scoring in the 20th minute with an assist from Akor Adams.

Victor Osimhen the Galatassary striker reinforced Nigeria’s stance by scoring twice in the 25th and 47th minute with assists from Akor Adams and Lookman respectively.

Akor Adams sealed Nigeria’s dominance at the 75th minute by claiming a goal for himself, assisted by Victor Osimhen, bringing Nigeria to a total of 12 goals, doubling as the most goal by any country in the tournament.

Nigeria has had a smooth sail on their journey towards winning a fourth AFCON, winning all three of their group stage matches to land them at the top of group c with 9 points ahead of Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania.

Mozambique on the other hand advanced to the knockout stage as 3rd place in group f barely securing a spot at the round of 16. They had one win against Gabon and two defeat from ivory coast and Cameroon.

This win sees Nigeria advance to the quarterfinal alongside Senegal, Mali, Morocco, Cameroon and Egypt.

The Super Eagles will go against either Algeria or Dr Congo in the quarter finals while Mozambique has joined Sudan, Tanzania, Tunisia, and South Africa as part of countries that have bid farewell to the tournament.

Nigeria’s performance has garnered attention from across the continent and boosted the momentum among their fans.

Many believe their impressive run is a redemption or a make up for their failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World cup.
